Typha latifolia (Greater reed mace)

Typha latifolia (Greater reed mace) is our tallest native reed mace; dark brown fat pokers are produced on tall strong stems.

Typha latifolia (Greater reed mace) is our tallest native reed mace. It is a most invasive native pond plant, beaten only by Norfolk reed. Dark brown fat pokers are produced on tall strong stems, the flat leaves are wider than those of other reed mace. Distinguished from lesser reed mace by the fact that the male and female parts of the flowers are adjacent rather than separated by a small gap (oo er missus!) It is really only suitable for large wildlife ponds and can only be contained by depths over 1.5 metres.
