Lysichiton camtschatcensis (White skunk cabbage) is a spectacular plant and I don’t think that the name does it justice really; the leaves and flowers do smell a bit foxy but are both huge and perform early in the season before almost everything else. The big leaves make a welcome change from the narrow grassy look of many pond plants. The yellow flowered species L americanum has been banned due to its invasive tendencies, but this one rarely sets seed naturally and is slow to establish and grow. It takes many years before it becomes full size and so is relatively expensive.
