Acorus calamus Variegatus (Variegated sweet flag) is a clump forming rush with sweetly scented green and white variegated leaves, steadily spreading in shallow water or wet ground. Non-invasive and useful for natural swimming ponds as it produces little debris. This is a very under-used plant to my mind, which is a pity, probably because it doesn’t have big showy coloured flowers. However it produces lovely fans of cleanly variegated and sweet smelling foliage over a long period and is especially valuable in an architectural planting scheme. It’s easy and problem free too.
